Monday 26 September 2016

The winds continued to blow from the south and west today, and conditions in the morning were wet. Despite this, the day proved to be very productive. There appeared to be a lot more activity across the island. Due to the conditions, the sea was the main focus in the morning, and produced the first Sabine’s Gull of the autumn, with a strong supporting cast of 31 Common Scoters, four Purple Sandpipers, two Pomarine Skuas, two Arctic Skuas, one Mediterranean Gull, one first-winter Little Gull, seven Guillemots and 552 Razorbills.

The day warmed up and the sun began to show signs of breaking through the dense cloud, so our attentions changed to the land. It wasn’t long before a new unringed Melodious Warbler was found in Cristin Withy, along with at least a quarter of today’s warbler totals. Two Blackcaps, 14 Chiffchaffs, four Willow Warblers and 44 Goldcrests were all seen on the island. The Melodious Warbler provided ample entertainment for many of the visitors and showed well at points throughout the day, whilst the bird at the observatory continued to dwell in the garden.

This wasn’t all though, the South End still had its hand to play. Two female Redstarts, were new in and a pair of Lapland Buntings were seen mingling in with the Meadow Pipit flocks.

The mixed group of waders continued to reside in Henllwyn and Solfach with 10 Ringed Plovers, nine Dunlins, one Bar-tailed Godwit, three Redshanks and 76 Turnstones all seen on the Narrows. Elsewhere two Grey Herons, three Water Rails, two Snipes, 43 Swallows, 17 House Martins, 130 Meadow Pipits, one Grey Wagtail, five White Wagtails, 14 Stonechats and five Wheatears, were seen scattered across the island.
